Taka Ishii Gallery will exhibit four new works by Los Angeles based artist Sterling Ruby.

His recent series of assemblage works build upon a reclaiming and reassessing of previous artworks, in a sense instigating a private archaeology, one that considers the remains and exhumation of previous works, autobiographical ephemera and studio materials.

For his new fabric collages, the artist repurposes rags, fabric scraps, clothing, and denim. These patchwork collages derive their playful, almost pop-like, formal patterning from the craft of quilt making. One is reminded in particular of the utilitarian works of the artists from Gee's Bend, as well as Japanese Boro Textiles. These patch-worked canvases inhabit an interstitial space between a creative utility and an aggressive futility, painting and craft, industry and waste.
